England missed a golden opportunity of winning the first Test against Sri Lanka when Shaminda Eranga and Nuwan Pradeep survived a few anxious moments on the final day. The hosts proved their superiority in almost all departments of the game backed up by their tremendous batting and bowling. The Lankan Lions negotiated well in the first innings but their middle and lower order batting collapsed in the second. The final Test at Headingley, Leeds will determine the fate of the series and the hosts will anticipate winning the game.
Joe Root blasted an unbeaten double hundred in the first innings of the last Test along with 86 runs from Matt Prior and a fifty from Ian Bell. Gary Ballance tasted his maiden hundred in the second innings while Alastair Cook is required to lead from the front. James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Jordan demonstrated excellent fast bowling in the previous game.
The evergreen Kumar Sangakkara dispatched his 36th Test century at Lord’s followed by a fifty in the second and his skipper Angelo Mathews registered his third hundred. Kaushal Silva scored half centuries in each innings, Mahela Jayawardene got a fifty in the game and all these batsmen will play an important role in the second Test. Nuwan Pradeep, Shaminda Eranga and Rangana Herath were their wicket taking bowlers.
