Pitch & Conditions

Adelaide Oval like quite a few grounds in Australia has a drop in pitch. As seen right through the summer, it should be dry and the straw coloured wicket should offer plenty of runs.

Some weather is predicted; which if the showers do come down, England will be eliminated.

Key Contests

Shakib Al Hasan has been one of the World’s most prolific all rounders over the past 3-4 years. His left arm orthodox along with his attacking batting have sparked many a Bangladesh win in the last few years and they will be hoping he can continue his good form.

James Anderson has been off colour this World Cup. It is hard to imagine that a player of such calibre is unable to make an impact. Anderson has averaged 63 in World Cup matches outside of his showing in the ’03 format. His lack of pace & swing are part of the reason England find themselves in a hole.

The English will have their work cut out in the middle overs. Bangladesh stifled the England batsman in the 2011 World Cup with their spinners and England even had the services of Kevin Pietersen in their line up then!

Prediction

A. Team winning the toss should bat first despite overcast conditions expected in the morning. Too much on stake to have scoreboard pressure to deal with. However, Bangladesh have chased well this tournament.

B. England should go through if they hold their nerve but I reckon a Bangladesh surprise is on the cards and they will go through.

C. Serious chances of an early shower. The severity of that could determine a lot of things including a decision to chase.

Bangladesh have set England a respective 276 in order for them to qualify for the Knockout stages of the tournament. Bangladesh looked like they would get to a score in excess of 300 but a flurry of wickets at the back end of the innings there reduced the chances of that happening.

Nonetheless, England do have their work cut out. Here is an interesting stat to put things into perspective!

In World Cup encounters, only twice has England chased a score in excess of 275. Once against West Indies in 2007 & the other time against Netherlands in 2011. In the same situation, they have gone on to lose more games than they have won.

England are up against it. 164-6. Butler and the tail to come. I am more or less certain England are going to go down here. It would really need a freak of an innings from either Woakes or Butler to dig them out of this hole.

Prediction

Everything is wrong about English cricket at the moment and the pressure of that, the sense of the occasion, job security of the players, skipper, the coach, the MD of ECB are all in question; the sense of all of that is going to bring England down this World Cup & it should result in an England loss.
