The rain restricted first One Day International of the five match series between South Africa and West Indies was decided on the Duckworth/Lewis method as the hosts beat the visitors by 61 runs. The Proteas hammered 279 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 48.2 overs when play got stopped because of rain. The Windies were handed over a task of 226 in 32 overs but their innings was squeezed for 164 with 22 balls still available. The hosts lead the series at 1-0 and will go into the next game with much confidence while the Tourists should concentrate on squaring it.
AB de Villiers led his side from the front by smashing 81 runs, David Miller and Hashim Amla contributed 70 and 66. Faf du Plessis along with Rilee Rossouw were bowled out for a duck but they are capable of bouncing back whereas Jean-Paul Duminy is a class all-rounder. Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Imran Tahir shared three wickets each as Morne Morkel is a dangerous bowler.
Chris Gayle was the top scorer for the Caribbeans with 41, Denesh Ramdin and Dwayne Smith were the other two batsmen who contributed 31 and 29. Rest of the top, middle and lower order batting surrendered cheaply but they should concentrate in the following games. Jerome Taylor, Andre Russell held two wickets each and they will look forward for a valid support from Jason Holder, Darren Sammy and Sulieman Benn.
