Next Wednesday, Ecuador will go head-to-head with England at Sunlife Stadium in Miami on a match that will serve both teams’ purpose of preparing the World Cup tournament that is just ten days away.
Last Friday, England easily defeated Peru at Wembley by 3-0 but it took some time before Roy Hodgson’s men were able to take full control of the match. The man of the match, Daniel Sturridge, opened the score in great style for the Three Lions and offered them a first-half lead that proved to be crucial for the team’s slight improvement during the second-half. Last Friday’s win was the second England had on friendly matches over a period of almost two months, after beating Denmark earlier in March by 1-0, at Wembley Stadium thanks to a goal from Daniel Sturridge, who is beginning to look as the usual suspect when it comes to scoring goals lately.
Next Wednesday’s match against Ecuador might not, nevertheless, be as “easy” as the one against their South American counterparts. Although they were completely trashed by Mexico last Saturday, Ecuador grabbed an excellent draw at Amsterdam two weeks ago against an always powerful Holland side. This dichotomy in their performances is something that England must be aware of if they don’t want to be caught red-handed next Wednesday.
There are some good news on the medical department for Roy Hodgson as he will already be able to count on the contribution of Phil Jones and Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been sidelined due to injury.
As for Ecuador, the match against England represents a good opportunity for the team to recover from their recent upset against Mexico. The Ecuatorians sucumbed 3-1 at the hands of an inspired Mexico side and have somehow blurred the good image they had made of themselves on the match against The Netherlands. The team’s head coach, Reinaldo Rueda, is aware of the quality of his players and he knows they can take something very positive from the World Cup, since they are on a group (together with Switzerland, France and Honduras) that it is far from being one of the most complicated ones.
For the match against England, Reinaldo Rueda will not be able to count on Segundo Castillo, who suffered a severe injury against Mexico last Saturday and which will rule him out from the World Cup tournament.
England and Ecuador have only met once before: it was eight years ago at 2006 World Cup and the Three Lions won by 1-0 thanks to a goal by David Beckham. England are favourites for next Wednesday’s match, although it might a good idea for them not to rely too much on their alleged favouritism if they do not want to have any major upsets.
