At a first glance, it looks like an April Fools’ prank, at least for Chelsea supporters, but there are absolutely no doubts that Frank Lampard will be joining Manchester City on loan until January 2015. The Citizens’ boss, Manuel Pellegrini, confirmed yesterday that the English international and legendary Chelsea midfielder will join his team and that he will fight for a place at City’s starting line-up.
Frank Lampard signed a two-year contract with the US team New York City FC, after he spent thirteen remarkable seasons with the London Blues. Nevertheless, since the Major League Soccer season only starts in March 2015, Lampard will now embark on what will certainly be his last stint at English football.
After Manchester City’s match against Olympiacos last Saturday, Manuel Pellegrini commented for the first time on the arrival of Lampard to the team and claimed that, despite the English midfielder’s age, he might still have an important role at City, especially because of his enormous experience that might turn out to be vital for the UEFA Champions League’s matches: "He knows we have a very good team, we have a lot of players in his position. He is one player more, (...) "We have a lot of games particularly with the Champions League - so he's very important for our team."
After thirteen years with Chelsea, Frank Lampard became a true legend at the club. The English all-terrain midfielder took part in almost 650 matches with the Blues and he scored the impressive number of 211 goals for them, thus transforming himself into the team’s record scorer. Lampard is an example of loyalty to a club and his new “adventure” at English football, defending the colours of Manchester City will certainly not be enough to pinch such reputation, not even if he is eventually “forced” to face his all-time club. When asked to comment on that topic, the Chilean manager dismissed all the fuss surrounding the issue and claimed that he will take part in every match he needs to play.
There is surely nothing one can say about Lampard that hasn't been said before, although it is never too much to underline what a great player he was and still is, no matter what team he is playing for. The former Chelsea’s midfielder completed more than 100 matches for his National Team and has been winning, in all fairness, several individual prizes throughout his already long career.
