More ball possession, more goal chances and plenty more corner kicks weren’t enough to allow the Saints to overcome Everton last weekend at Goodison Park. After three matches without defeats, Southampton sucumbed again at the expenses of a somewhat inconsistent Everton that seem to have finally found a way to climb some places in the league table now that the season is coming to an end.

Southampton are beyond any doubts one of the most interesting teams of the current campaign, but since the new year has started, the Saints haven’t seem to be as strong as they were until last December. Nevertheless, Ronald Koeman’s work at the helm of the team has been remarkable and when some thought that it would be impossible to do better than what Mauricio Pochettino had achieved last season, the Dutchman proved them wrong.

Southampton’s upcoming match will probably not be a walk in the park, especially if we have in mind that their opponents, Hull City, are just one place above the relegation zone on the league table and desperately need points to escape.

As for Hull, the Tigers are having a rough time at EPL, as they’ve failed to win their last five matches. After two consecutive home wins, against QPR and Aston Villa, Hull have once again returned to their usual inconsistency and now they found themselves very close to the pits of the relegation zone. After being narrowly defeated at home by Chelsea three weeks ago, the Tigers sucumbed again last weekend when they visited Liberty Stadium to measure forces with Swansea. Hull went down 3-1 and changed places with Sunderland at the league table due to that defeat.

Despite their recent defeat against Everton, Southampton are firm favourites for next Saturday’s match against the Tigers, who have only won twice away from home so far this season.
