Next Saturday, Lille will take on the already coronated French champions Paris SG at Stade Pierre-Mauroy for round 37 of the French Ligue 1 on a match of major importance for the home side if they want to secure the 3rd place of the table and keep Saint-Éttiene at bay.
Last weekend, Lille travelled to the island of Corsica to face Bastia and the match's outcome was certainly not what Les Dogues were expecting. The home side scored a late goal that gave them the equalizer and shredded Lille’s already faint expectations of reaching Monaco at the second place of the table. Who benefited from Lille’s draw was Saint-Éttiene (that currently occupy the 4th place of the table) by winning their home match against Montpellier and closing the gap to Lille to only four points.
Lille are currently on a fantastic 13 match run without suffering a single defeat and, despite the fact of playing against the new French champions next Saturday, they will surely want to keep their impressive recent record and to impose Paris SG's fourth defeat of the season.
For the clash against the Parisiens, René Girard will still not be able to count on the French midfielder Jonathan Delaplace, who is not yet fully recovered from his respective injury.
As for Paris SG, the capital city team has celebrated the conquest of their fourth French league title even before entering their midweek home match against Stade Rennais, thanks to Monaco’s home draw with Guingamp. What could have been a perfect day for Paris SG ended up in a disappointing home defeat 2-1 against Stade Rennais, on a match where the new champions failed to find their way into the visitors' well organized defence line.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic back in action, Paris SG's head coach (Laurent Blanc) will almost surely have all his players at his disposal for their trip to Lille.
When both sides met at Parc des Princes back in December, the match ended in a 2-2 draw on a match where the home side could consider themselves lucky with the final outcome, since they only got the equalizer thanks to an own goal by Marko Basa. Next Saturday’s match might be a good opportunity for Lille to prove all their worth and to beat the new Ligue 1 champions.
