Next Sunday, Fiorentina will take on Torino at Stadio Artemio Franchi for the last round of the Italian Serie A, on a match of the utmost importance for the visitors, who have not yet managed to secure the sixth place of the table, which would provide them with a place at the UEFA Europa League next season.

Will Torino be able to grant a place at the UEFA European League on their match against Fiorentina next weekend?
Will Torino be able to grant a place at the UEFA European League on their match against Fiorentina next weekend?

Last Sunday, Torino failed to win their home match against Parma and delayed the decision of what team will stay at the sixth place of the Serie A table this season to the last round of the season. The Turin team got the lead during the first half thanks to a goal from the usual suspect (Ciro Immobile) but allowed Parma to get back in match on the 71st minute, when Jonathan Biabiany netted in the equalizer.

The fight for a place at the UEFA Europa League next season will be fierce on the last round of Serie A, but Torino only depend on themselves to secure the sixth place and to claim their place at the UEFA competition next term.

For the clash against Fiorentina, Torino’s head coach Giampiero Ventura will probably still not be able to count on the Belgian goalkeeper Jean-François Gillet, on the Swedish midfielder Alexander Farnerud, and on the Albanian midfielder Migjen Basha, all sidelined due to injury. On the other hand, he already knows for sure that the team’s most important player and Serie A’s top scorer Ciro Immobile will miss the match because he was sent off against Parma last weekend.

As for Fiorentina, the match against Torino will not have any special meaning, since the Viola have already granted both the fourth place of the table and their place at the UEFA Europa League next season. Last Sunday, Vincenzo Montella’s men clinched a 1-0 win at Livorno thanks to a goal from the  flamboyant Colombian midfielder Juan Cuadrado, who has been linked to Barcelona last week.

For the match against Torino, Vincenzo Montella is not yet certain if he will be able to count on the powerful German striker Mario Gómez (who recently admitted that this was by far the worst season of his entire career), because he is still recovering from his respective injury.

When both sides measured forces at Stadio Olimpico di Torino back in January, the match ended in a goalless draw. A similar outcome at the end of next Sunday’s match will quite probably not serve Torino’s interests since in case of win Parma will surpass them at the league table, thus kicking them out of UEFA Europa League next season.
