Next Saturday, 20th of September 2014, a super motivated AC Milan will take on the Italian reigning champions, Juventus, at San Siro for round 3 of Serie A on what will surely be the most important match of the weekend.
This might not be the AC Milan from Dejan Savicevic, Zvonimir Boban, Ruud Gullit or George Weah, but it is fair to mention that Filippo Inzaghi has been conducting a fantastic job at the helm of a club that fell into the abyss last season.
Last Sunday, the Milanese team was granted a fantastic 5-4 win at Stadio Ennio Tardini against Parma on a frantic and tremendously exciting clash. The match itself was an anthem to football with beautiful goals, such as the “cheeky” backheel by Jeremy Menez later in the second-half, and outrageous goalkeeping mistakes, such as the one from Diego López, who missed a back pass from De Sciglio and the ball ended inside his own net.
Inzaghi managed to perform something like a miracle at AC Milan. In just a few months’ work, the Rossoneri went from an inconsistent and often dull team to a ruthless goal scoring machine with an attractive game style.
Next weekend’s match is the third major test for Inzaghi, who has already overcame two tough bones to chew such as Lazio and Parma.
For the match against Juventus, the young Italian manager will not be able to count on Bonera, who was sent off last Sunday, on Montolivo, who is still sideline due to a long term injury, and he is not yet certain if the Spanish goalkeeper Diego López will recover in time for the clash as well.
As for Juventus, the Italian champions started off the season on the right foot, capturing six points in two matches, and despite the managerial change that is always a synonym of something new, whether for good or bad, the Vecchia Signora have managed to continue with their winning streak from last term.
Before taking on AC Milan over the weekend, the team of Massimiliano Allegri will take on Malmö next Tuesday for the first match of the UEFA Champions League group stage. Although the Swedish side is not one of the big names in European football, Juventus cannot take any risks in order to avoid a premature elimination from the most important club’s competition at the Old Continent.
When both sides met at the emblematic San Siro last season, the visitors grabbed a well-deserved 2-0 win thanks to goals from Llorente and Tévez, but this term it might not be that easy. Judging by the team’s recent performances, AC Milan are favourites to win the next Saturday’s clash, but in matches such as this, anything can happen.
