Next Sunday, a highly motivated Sevilla will take on Elche at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán for round 38, the last one of Liga BBVA this season, on a match that will serve the home side to celebrate their splendid midweek Europa League win with their supporters and to wave goodbye to a very positive season for the Sevillistas.
After losing their match at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez against Getafe last weekend, Sevilla managed to defeat Benfica on the UEFA Europa League final at Turin during the week and lifted the trophy for the third time in their history. Unai Emery’s boys only managed to sentence the match on penalties after achieving only a goalless draw during the 120 minutes of the match. The hero of the match was the Portuguese goalkeeper Beto, who stopped two Benfica’s penalties, the first one from the Paraguayan striker Cardozo and the second from the Brazilian-born Spanish wonderkid Rodrigo.
The match against Elche will only be important for Sevilla to secure the fifth place of the league table, since if the team loses the match and if Real Sociedad manage to defeat Villarreal, the Sevillistas will drop a place on the table.
For next Sunday’s clash, Unai Emery will need to implement some changes in the team after such a demanding match against Benfica last Wednesday. The skilled Russian winger Denis Cheryshev and the Uruguayan midfielder Sebastián Cristóforo will both miss the match due to long term injuries.
As for Elche, the Comunidad Valenciana team has already granted a place at the next Liga BBVA edition against Barcelona last weekend, as they managed to avoid relegation thanks to a goalless draw obtained against the Spanish current champions.
Los Franjiverdes continued their excellent home form against the Blaugranas last Sunday and, in fact, it were their performances at Martínez Valero that helped them avoid relegation. After reaching the 40 points safe haven, the next match at Sánchez Pizjuán will not have any major importance for Elche and their manager Fran Escribá will probably take this opportunity to implement some changes in the team.
For the Andalusian clash, Fran Escribá will probably still not be able to count on the contribution of the forwards Manu del Moral and Álvaro Giménez, both sidelined due to injury.
When both sides met at Martínez Valero earlier in January, the match ended in a 1-1 draw with both team’s goals being scored during the final ten minutes of the match. Next Sunday, Sevilla are firm favourites for winning the match, especially after the boost in their morale with the conquest of the UEFA Europa League.
