The US team almost got their second win at the tournament, if it wasn’t from Varela’s late goal that allowed the Portuguese to grab a last minute equalizer. After beating Ghana 2-1 on their first match, the USA took on Portugal last Sunday and the match could not have started in a worst way for the American team, since Nani opened the score for the Portuguese side after just five minutes played. The US team put up a quality performance and managed to bounce back on the second half thanks to goals by Jones and Dempsey.

The American team now has four points and if they manage to grab a draw against Germany next Thursday they will walk through to the next stage of the tournament regardless of the result of the match between Portugal and Ghana.

The US head coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, will certainly base his strategy on the counter-attack and on the acceleration skills from his wingers, Bedoya and Zusi, to try to surprise the always well organized German defensive wall.

For the match against Germany, Klinsmann is not yet certain if he will be able to count on the contribution of the powerful striker Jozy Altidore, who is currently sidelined due to injury.

As for Germany, the match against the US team will probably only serve the purpose of cementing their position at the top of the group. After trashing Portugal on their opening match, Die Mannschaft were somehow surprised by a brave Ghanaian side, who forced them to a 2-2 draw last Saturday. The Germans took the lead thanks to a goal by Mario Götze earlier in the second-half, but Ghana bounced back and, in just ten minutes, scored two goals, first by Andre Ayew and later by Asamoah Gyan. It was a frantic period of the match with three goals in just fifteen minutes, but it wasn’t over yet, since on the 71st minute the experienced centre forward Miroslav Klose equalized the match once again.

For the match against the US team, Joachim Löw will certainly have all the players at his disposal since there aren’t any names on the injury list so far.

Despite their draw against Ghana, Germany are firm favourites for next Thursday’s match as the US team might not have what is necessary to defeat a team as powerful the Germans.
