Last season was somewhat disappointing for Chelsea, as the Blues failed to win any single trophy and ended on the third place of the Premier League, behind Manchester City and Liverpool. The triumphant return of José Mourinho to Stamford Bridge somehow lost its momentum during the last part of the season due to some inconsistent performances, which led pundits to start question the Portuguese manager’s options during the last campaign.

José Mourinho didn’t let the World Cup emotions distract him and he started to plan the new campaign long ago. After the departure of some big names such as Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and David Luiz, Mourinho is apparently preparing a small “revolution” in the team, both tactically and in the squad list. For that matter, he already brought in former Arsenal and Barcelona’s midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Atlético Madrid’s sharpshooter Diego Costa, but they will certainly not be the only new faces at Stamford Bridge next season, since there are still several other names in line waiting for confirmation. The return of the Belgian goalie Courtois (after a three year loan spell at Los Colchoneros) will certainly offer Mourinho plenty to think about, especially if we consider that Petr Cech is still part of the team and they can’t play both at the same time.

The Blues returned to work last week, still without the players who attended the World Cup and with some others that still don’t know where they will play next season. For the team’s first match, Mourinho will only be able to count on the contribution of one centre forward, Demba Ba, since all the others are still enjoying their vacations after their World Cup stint. That absence might be beneficial for the Senegalese forward, as he might try to prove Mourinho that there is still room for him at the Blues’ team.

As for Wycombe, the match against the Blues will be part of their preparation for the new League Two season, which will start on the 9th August. After a disappointing season, during which they were on the verge of being relegated, Wycombe officials will have to redouble their efforts if they don’t want to replicate last term’s underachieving performances and a good result against a far superior team such as Chelsea might offer them the enough motivation to face the upcoming season with a smile on their faces.
