French Open 2014 winners

The second Grand Slam tournament of the season has finished. As always, on the Roland Garros’ clay courts, as it was expected, spectators saw lots of fight, beautiful rallies and strokes, many surprises and rising stars. The king and a queen of Paris are Rafael Nadal, who won 9^th title here, and Maria Sharapova, who was victorious for the 2^nd time. These two shared the spoils two years ago, in 2012, also.

Men’s single – Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal (ESP) defeated Novak Djokovic (SRB) by 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4

Nadal and Djokovic played for the second time in the Roland Garros final, and the result was the same – 3:1 for Nadal. Djokovic managed to win first set, but then failed to continue dominance, and Nadal, as the “king of clay” cruised to his 9^th Roland Garros title.

Women’s single – Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova (RUS) defeated Simona Halep (ROU) by 6-4, 6-7, 6-4

In women singles final, Maria Sharapova held onto the challenge of young Halep, and managed to win in three tight sets. Halep showed incredible consistency (konstantnost) throughout the tournament, but in the final the Russian was mentally stronger, and fought till the end.

Men’s double – Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin

Julien Benneteau (FRA)/Eduard Roger-Vasselin (FRA) defeated Marcel Granollers (ESP)/Marc Lopez (ESP) 6-3, 7-6

11^th seeded pair managed to beat 12^th seeded pair in this year’s tournament, and finally – victory for the home players! This is especially great reward to Benneteau, who is the biggest loser in single, from all active players – he didn’t win a singles title, he lost all of his 11 finals.

In this match, the French were leading from the start to the end, played constantly well, and deserved to win the trophy.

Women’s double – Hsieh/Peng

Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE)/Shuai Peng (CHN) defeated Sara Errani (ITA)/Roberta Vinci (ITA) 6-4, 6-1

In the women’s doubles finals the first two favorites managed to get to the final match. Although they were 2^nd seeded pair, Errani and Vinci were the favorites in this match, since they’ve previously won the title here. On the other hand, Hsieh and Peng up till now didn’t manage to win a Grand Slam title. However, Chinese and Taipei players have played very dominantly and won the match in straight sets, which gave them first Grand Slam doubles title.

Mixed double – Groenefeld/Rojer

Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER)/Jean-Julien Rojer (NED) defeated Julia Goerges (GER)/Nenad Zimonjic (SRB) 4-6, 6-2, 10-7

8^th seeded Zimonjic and Goerges lead and were in command of the match over unseeded Rojer and Groenefeld, but they failed to win the first mutual title. Groenefeld and Rojer won their first Grand Slam mixed doubles title.

Boys’ single – Andrey Rublev

Andrey Rublev (RUS) defeated Jaume Munar Clar (ESP) 6-2, 7-5

17-year-old Russian, and 4th seeded player of the tournament, easily beaten also 17-year-old Spaniard Munar Clar is straight sets. Rublev is started playing with seniors, and he is already near breaking into the top 500 players in the world, so he used that experience to easily dispatch Clar in this match.

Girls’ single – Darya Kasatkina

Darya Kasatkina (RUS) defeated Ivana Jorovic (SRB) 6-7, 6-2, 6-3

Serbian girl was 1^st seeded in this tournament, and a great favorite to win her first juniors Grand Slam title. She started of nicely, won the first set, but after that, the Russian player dominated until the end, and finished the match pretty comfortably.

Boys’ double – Bonzi/Halys

Benjamin Bonzi (FRA)/Quentin Halys (FRA) defeated Lucas Miedler (AUT)/Akira Santillan (AUS) 6-3, 6-3

After unsuccessful singles tournament, these boys turned attention to the doubles. Both pairs were unseeded, and managed to beat some of the favorites for title along the way. Bonzi and Halys won it for France, pretty comfortably, in straight sets.

Girls' double – Ducu/Rosca

Ioana Ducu (ROU)/Ioana Loredana Rosca (ROU) defeated Catherine Bellis (USA)/Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) 6-1, 5-7, 11-9

Same as in the boys doubles, these girls had dissapointing singles tournament, and put their focus into the doubles. Ducu and Rosca, as the unseeded outsiders in this match, managed to beat 7^th seeded pair and made an ultimate triumph in the exciting match.

Men’s legends – McEnroe/McEnroe

John McEnroe (USA)/Patrick McEnroe (USA) defeated Andres Gomez (ECU)/Mark Woodforde (AUS) 4-6, 7-5, 10-7

The two brothers were trailing after the first set, but managed to fight back, and win the trophy at the end.

Women’s legends – Clijsters/Navratilova

Kim Clijsters (BEL)/Martina Navratilova (USA) defeated Nathalie Dechy (FRA)/Sandrine Testud (FRA) 5-7, 7-5, 10-7

Clijsters and Navratilova were the first favorites of this tournament, and managed to win it in the end, against the French pair. Dechy and Testud lead after the first set, but couldn't finish off more famous opponents and Navratilova and Clijsters won the trophy in women’s legends tournament.
