Nick Kyrgios - The Power of The Force

You may not have heard about this 19-year old Australian Wonderboy before Wimbledon but chances are good that you heard about him during the tournament and will definitely hear about him in the future. After demolishing top seed Rafa Nadal (7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3) in the Round of 16, Krygios ran into young but tested Canadian 9^th seed Milos Raonic (7-6(4), 2-6, 4-6, 6-7(4)) before succumbing. Nervous and slightly off, Nick never quite found the game that led him past Nadal but nonetheless earned his biggest payday to date.

What you have to like about this 2013 Australian Open Boys Champion is that he is marching forward. He has already joined the likes of Nadal and Wimbledon Champion Novak Djokovic as one of just 15 pros that claimed their maiden ATP Challenger Tour crown by age 18.

Other similarities with Nadal and Djokovic are that Krygios is level-headed, a fierce competitor and gifted athlete who could just as easily have made a career of professional basketball. Recent Australian supermen have succumbed to the glare of the public eye, but all indications are that Krygios has big ambitions and will not be distracted until he has achieved his goals.

The 6’4” Aussie possess a dominating serve, a powerful forehand and uncanny speed that he uses to cover the court. His success at Wimbledon raised his 2014 earnings over the $500,000 mark and spiked his ATP ranking to number 65, not too shabby for a 19 year old who considered giving up the sport in favor of basketball just 4 years ago.

Nick credits his Greek (father) – Malayasian (mother) background with the stability to manage his success. While he succeeded on grass at Wimbledon, the players fear his clay game equally. He was ousted by Raonic in the first round at Roland Garros this year but keep an eye on Nick in Paris next year. Krygios did win his first round match at Roland Garros in 2013 and will never again be an easy or nervous target. As the number 1 on the Challenger Tour, his 15-2 2014 record is representative of what we can expect.

Although relatively unproven on hard court, players will not be happy to see Nick’s name in their share of the draw at the upcoming US open. The mind is secure and his game is too big to be taken lightly!
