Wimbledon 2014 Women’s Single Draw Preview

The third Grand Slam tournament of the season will be played from June 23rd to July 6th. The draws are available and first seed Serena Williams is the number one contender for the title, after two early exits in the previous Grand Slam tournaments.

Serena will start her campaign against Anna Tatishvili, and in the second round she could play either Scheepers or McHale. In the third round she could face 25^th seed Alize Korne, and winning all of these matches should be an easy task for her.

But, in the fourth round, she could face either Petkovic or Bouchard, who both reached Roland Garros semifinals, and that match could be a real test for Serena. In the quarterfinals she could play with Maria Sharapova, the winner in Paris, against whom she has a fantastic string of results.

In the semifinal Serena could face the Roland Garros finalist Simona Halep.

On her road to the possible match with Serena, Sharapova will face the British player Samantha Murray; in the second round she could play either Bacsinszky or Fichman, and in the third round she could face her compatriot Pavlyuchenkova, who is 26^th seed. In that part of the draw is also young Camila Giorgi, who beat Sharapova in this year’s Indian Wales, so it would be very interesting to see that match in the third round. In the fourth round she could face Angelique Kerber.

Simona Halep, who never played well on the grass courts, has an easy draw ahead of her in the first rounds. She starts against Brazilian Pereira, in the second round she could face either Pfizenmaier or Tsurenko, and in the third round she could play against compatriot Sorana Cirstea. In the fourth, she could face Carla Suarez Navarro, against whom she played 8 matches and won 4 of them, but Halep won their only grass court encounter. However, Navarro isn’t great on grass either, so unseeded Zvonareva and Mladenovic could go far, from that section. In the quarters she could face another player who isn’t great on grass - Jelena Jankovic, but Jankovic has the clash with Ivanovic in the fourth round, so she could exit the tournament in that match.

Agnieszka Radwanska, a finalist two years ago, will play against Romanian Mitu in the first round and after that either Dellacqua or Kontaveit. In the third round she could face Kuznetsova, and in the fourth round Sara Errani, who plays poor on this surface, so from that section former semifinalist Tsvetana Pironkova could go far. In the quarterfinals, she could face Victoria Azarenka, who was injured for a huge part of the season.

Tara Moore will play Vera Zvonareva, Johanna Konta will face Shuai Peng, Naomi Broady will have a nice chance against Timea Babos, Heather Watson would have a tough match against Ajla Tomljanovic, who has had a great time at the Roland Garros, and Samantha Murray will play against Maria Sharapova.
