Next Saturday, 23rd August 2014, Borussia Dortmund will take on Bayer Leverkusen at the Westfalenstadion for the opening round of the 2014-15 Bundesliga edition.
After having failed to cope with Bayern Munich’s power last term, Borussia Dortmund start this new season with renewed hopes, especially after defeating their Bavarian rivals on the German Super Cup clash last week. Jürgen Klopp’s boys put up some quality performances during the pre-season matches, except for their visit to Anfield Road where they were severely hammered by a super inspired Liverpool.
Last Saturday, Dortmund slammed Stuttgarter Kickers, a modest side from the German third tier, for the DFB Pokal and granted a place at the next stage of the competition. Dortmund controlled the entire match and, although their opponents were fairly dangerous on the counter-attack, they ended up by winning the match quite easily.
The departure of the Polish goal scoring machine, Robert Lewandowski, opened the door for new strikers at Westfalenstadion. The Italian Ciro Immobile and the Colombian Adrían Ramos are the two new faces at the team’s forward line.
For next Saturday’s complicated match against Bayer Leverkusen, Jürgen Klopp will certainly remain faithful to his usual 4-2-3-1, with Reus, Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang supporting Immobile up in the front. The German manager, who was taunted by the large amount of injured players during last season, will only not be able to count on the left back Marcel Schmelzer, who is currently sidelined due to a torn abductor in his groin.
As for Bayer Leverkusen, the match against such a powerful rival is probably not the best way to start the new season, although they have a fairly interesting set of players who are capable of causing some damage at BVB’s structure.
Bayer brought in several quality players during the Summer, such as the Swiss striker Josip Drmic, the flamboyant Turkish midfielder Hakan Çalhanoglu and the Ukrainian wonderkid Vladen Yurchenko.
Roger Schmidt’s boys were only defeated once during the pre-season matches, at the hands of Bielsa’s Marseille, and they managed to put up some quality performances in almost all the clashes.
When both sides last met at Westfalenstadion back in December, Leverkusen caused a major upset to the hosts as they won the match 1-0, thanks to a goal from Son Heung-Min during the first-half. Nevertheless, Dortmund are to be considered favourites for next Saturday’s match but they need to take care since they will face one of the most talented teams at the Bundesliga, which may certainly cause them some damage.
