Next Saturday, 29th of August 2015, the all-powerful Real Madrid will measure forces with the newcomers Real Betis at the emblematic Santiago Bernabéu for Round 2 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.
Real Madrid’s performance at El Molinon last Sunday’s night was far from being glamorous and the match's outcome was proof that Rafa Benitez still has plenty of work to do in order to restore Los Blancos’ faint flame. Without Benzema, Benitez opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Ronaldo, Bale and Jese up front but the lack of a reference player inside the box didn’t help Real Madrid’s attacking processes. Los Blancos pushed Sporting de Gijón against the ropes during the entire match and the Asturian team only managed to disturb them with quick counter-attacks and free-kicks.
Cristiano Ronaldo tried, on several different occasions, to break the deadlock but Sporting’s goalkeeper, Ivan Cuellar, frustrated all of his attempts by putting up a vintage performance that in the end granted his team a motivating and valuable draw.
Los Blancos are still adapting to their new manager’s philosophies and new ideas usually take some time to be implemented. Nevertheless, the clock doesn’t stop ticking and next weekend, Real Madrid will have a very important match against Real Betis, which is a fairly organized team and will certainly try to take something positive from their visit to Bernabéu.
As for Real Betis, the La Liga newcomers had a complicated test on their return to the Spanish football top tier but managed to secure one point thanks to a last minute goal by the usual suspect, Ruben Castro. Los Beticos had apparent control of the match against Villarreal at Benito Villamarin, but it was the visitors who scored first by Roberto Soldado, still during the first-half. Pepe Mel’s men reacted positively to the goal disadvantage and pushed their opponents against the ropes on several occasions but the equalizer only arrived on the 86th minute, after an incomplete save from Villarreal’s French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola that Ruben Castro placed inside the empty net.
The last time Real Betis visited Bernabéu they were only defeated by a narrow 2-1 margin but they are certainly hoping to replicate what they achieved back in 1998, when they left the Spanish capital city with the three points after a splendid 1-0 win.
