Next Tuesday, Manchester United will entertain the German current champions Bayern Munich at Old Trafford for the Quarter-finals first leg of the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils have been having a season to forget on domestic competitions so far this season, with the team quietly sitting at the seventh place of the Premier League table, eighteen points behind Chelsea and six points behind a place that would grant them European football next season.
United’s harsh reality this season has only be eased by some quality performances at the UEFA Champions League, however, for supporters, that might not be enough. The team lacks consistency, their defence line looks chaotic and the midfield looks deprived from ideas despite the quality of the players.
David Moyes, who has assumed full responsibility for United’s dramatic decline this season after last Tuesday’s match against their rivals Manchester City, will have plenty to worry about for the clash against Bayern Munich, specially when it comes to injuries, since he will not be able to count on Robin Van Persie, the team’s top goalscorer, due to a knee injury, which will keep him out of the team for approximately six weeks.
As for Bayern Munich, this clash against Manchester United couldn’t have come at a better time. The German side were coronated as the Bundesliga 2013-14 Champions last Tuesday with seven matches still to play until the end of the season and keeps breaking one record after another, remaining undefeated since last December when they sucumbed to Manchester City at the Allianz Arena.
The Spanish manager reinvented an already almost flawless Bayern Munich side and he is driving the team to another successful chapter of their history.
For next Tuesday’s match, Guardiola will have all of his most important players at his disposal to prepare the assault on Manchester United’s castle. Last time both teams met at Old Trafford was back in 2010 and at the time the Red Devils grabbed an important 3-2 win with two goals from Nani and one from Gibson.
This term, however, history might be slightly different, as Manchester United are far from having what it takes to beat an organized, structured and well orientated Bayern Munich.
