After defeating Rayo Vallecano for La Liga, next Wednesday, Real Madrid will measure forces with Borussia Dortmund on the UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals first leg at Santiago Bernabéu, having in mind last season’s elimination at the hands of the German side and the four goals Robert Lewandowski have scored. After two consecutive slip-ups at Liga BBVA, Los Blancos managed to grab an important and motivating 5-0 victory over a fragile Rayo Vallecano side last Saturday and for that reason they can look at next Wednesday’s clash with a fair share of motivation. Real Madrid supporters were not pleased with the team’s recent performances and they booed some of the team’s players, including Ronaldo, during their recent match against Rayo.

Carlo Ancelotti is certainly worried with Cristiano Ronaldo’s physical condition after the media have hinted that the Portuguese footballer has a minor injury that is affecting his performances. For next Wednesday’s match, the Italian head coach will not be able to count on Arbeloa, Sami Khedira, and Jesé, all of them out of the team due to long term injuries.

After having defeated Bayern Munich at the DFL Supercup earlier this season, Borussia Dortmund have been having, so far, what one may call a disappointing campaign at Bundesliga. They allowed Bayern to renew their league title and they are currently sitting 23 points behind the Bavarian team. Jürgen Klopp’s side has been baffled with injuries this term and they will travel to Spain without some of their most important players. The Polish sharpshooter Robert Lewandowski is suspended, while Neven Subotic, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Marcel Schmelzer, Sven Bender and Ilkay Gündogan are all impeded from playing, a consequence of complicated and long term injuries.

Last season, both teams also met at Santiago Bernabéu in April and Real Madrid grabbed a 2-0 victory over the German side. However, such good result was not enough for Los Blancos to go through the next stage of the Champions League, since they had been defeated 4-1 at Westfalenstadion one week earlier. Next Wednesday’s match could go either way, and although Real Madrid might enjoy some advantage for playing at home, Dortmund will certainly try to explore some vulnerabilities that are beginning to show at the home side, particularly after their recent upsets at La Liga.
