Next Wednesday, 15th of April 2015, the two-time European champions FC Porto will entertain the all-powerful Bayern Munich at Estádio do Dragão for the first leg of the Quarter-finals stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Back in 1987, the Algerian diamond Rabah Madjer stunned Bayern Munich’s goalkeeper and their highly experienced defence line, when he scored a magnificent back-heel goal that helped FC Porto to win the European Cup (UEFA Champions League). Things have change a lot since that memorable moment for both teams, but the Portuguese team wants to replicate that performance and respective win when they meet Pep Guardiola’s super Bayern at Estádio do Dragão next Wednesday.
FC Porto are yet to be defeated at the tournament so far and, alongside with AS Monaco, they have assumed the role of underdogs at this stage of the competition. On the last round, after a 1-1 draw in Switzerland, the Dragons pulverized FC Basel at Porto by 4-0 and have, therefore, deservedly granted their place on the Quarter-finals stage of the tournament, something that they had been failing to achieve for quite some time.
FC Porto usually put up quality performances every time they measure forces with Bayern Munich and, although they have failed to win any of the last four times they went head-to-head, they have everything in their favour to build up a good result for next Wednesday’s match.
As for Bayern Munich, they have not experienced any major difficulties to overcome Shakhtar Donetsk on the last round of the competition, especially on the 2nd leg match at Allianz Arena, which the German champions won by 7-0.
Bayern’s injury list is currently Pep Guardiola’s biggest concern. The Bundesliga’s champions only had 14 players available for their last weekend’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt and things will not certainly be very different for their visit to Porto next Wednesday.
Although Bayern continue to display their immense power both on domestic and on international competitions, they have already suffered some setbacks, something that proves that they are not unbeatable, far from that. After losing to Wolfsburg earlier this year, the powerful Bayern lost again, this time at home, to the mighty and well organized Borussia Moenchengladbach. Guardiola is aware of his team’s frailties pretty well and he will surely do everything within his reach to mitigate them, as to avoid another sour setback against his fellow countryman’s, Julen Lopetegui, FC Porto.
Despite FC Porto’s recent streak in this particular competition, Bayern Munich are favourites to win or at least snatch a draw on next Wednesday’s clash.
