Andy Murray is the reigning champion, he beat Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, and David Goffin’s career high result at Wimbledon was reached two years ago, when he got to the third round.

The Belgian 24-year-old first appeared on the Grand Slams two years ago in Paris, immediately entering fourth round, and pushed Roger Federer to the limits, after he won the first set. Federer managed to win in four, but the youngster proved his worth to the world in that tournament. He had a solid 3R performance in Wimbledon too, but after that he never managed to win a match in Grand Slams. It should be said he hasn’t had luck on his side, though. He was drawn with Tomas Berdych and Novak Djokovic in the first round; and now he has to play against Andy Murray. However, he will be very motivated to give his best, since he didn’t play particularly well this season.

Andy Murray hasn’t achieved anything great in this year either. He dropped in the rankings, down to number eight; he parted ways with Ivan Lendl, who coached him to his biggest successes – two Slam wins and an Olympic gold medal. Murray capitalized on his easier draw in Paris and made it through the semifinals in Roland Garros, where he was easily dispatched by Rafael Nadal. However, he had a bad time at the Queens tournament; he lost to Radek Stepanek in round three.

Murray is a strong favorite in this match, but Goffin could pose him a threat if he plays passive, and the Brit is often in that passive mode. Goffin lacks the destructive power of a great serve in his playing, because he isn’t very tall, but he can be very aggressive on returns, and can dictate rallies, especially in the high speed courts, such as Wimbledon’s grass.

The fate of this match rests, of course, on Murray’s racquet, but he must stay focused and strong throughout the whole encounter to avoid problems which Goffin may cause him.

Head to head

This is the first match between these two players.
