Next Saturday, 23rd of May 2015, the former European champions Borussia Dortmund will take on Werder Bremen at Westfalenstadion for the last and decisive match of this season’s edition of Bundesliga.
Dortmund, who have underwent a fantastic recovery during the second part of the season after the Winter break, are still threatened by the possibility of not having European football next season. A defeat against Werder Bremen on Saturday will force them to win the Pokal final later this month in order to secure a place at the UEFA Europa League next term, but that match will surely not be an easy one given the impressive quality of their opponent, Wolfsburg.
After last weekend’s defeat against Dieter Hecking’s Wolfsburg, Dortmund need to defeat Bremen on the last match of the season thus granting, in the worst of possible scenario, the seventh place of the Bundesliga table, something that would automatically grant them a place at European football on the upcoming season.
Dortmund had a season to forget: 14 defeats in 33 matches so far, is one their worst records ever in their recent history and the faint, but feasible, possibility of not playing European football next term would certainly constitute an huge blow to the team’s overall aspirations.
As for Werder Bremen, die Grün-Weissen took a similar path from their next Saturday’s opponents. Bremen’s first half of the season was truly mediocre but the arrival of Viktor Skrypnyk to the helm of the team catapulted them to a fantastic recovery and to an unbelievable improvement on the team’s overall game. The Ukrainian manager, who has been with Bremen since 1996, first as a player and later as a Youth and reserves coach, restored the club’s dignity and now has a faint possibility of granting a place in the UEFA Europa League next season, but in order to achieve that, his team needs to win next Saturday’s match and hope that Wolfsburg is defeated at the Pokal final.
