The Lankan Lions negotiated well in the first innings but their middle and lower order batting collapsed in the second. Joe Root blasted an unbeaten double hundred in the first innings of the last Test along with 86 runs from Matt Prior and a fifty from Ian Bell. Gary Ballance tasted his maiden hundred in the second innings while Alastair Cook is required to lead from the front. James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Jordan demonstrated excellent fast bowling in the previous game.

The evergreen Kumar Sangakkara dispatched his 36th Test century at Lord’s followed by a fifty in the second and his skipper Angelo Mathews registered his third hundred.
