Darren Ferguson’s side continue to struggle towards their playoff position, having made a meal of tying down the spot in recent weeks. The side are still sitting in sixth, though have been looking over their shoulder in recent weeks as a late push from Swindon could take them all the way. The chance to come up against Shrewsbury, then, might be just what they need. Fighting against relegation, League Two is looking an increasingly likely result for Mike Jackson’s side. Both sides will line up in a nominal 4-4-2, so the pace of the wingers and the full backs could be key in what will likely be a hard fought game.
Should they miss out on the playoff positions, Peterborough will scold themselves for letting their chance slip. Having been strong throughout the season, a few bad results in the previous weeks have been enough to throw their position into doubt. Having thought they had arrested the decline with victories over Gillingham and Coventry, they promptly went and lost to mid table Bradford. While they should have enough to see out the season in sixth, the team will be hoping to hit a run of form before the all-important playoff matches.
Shrewsbury, on the other hand, will be beginning to plan for the drop. Unable to string together back to back victories, they have struggled for form all season. A relatively decent goal difference, however, points at not a huge drop in quality when faced with the teams around them, but goals have been hard to come by. Should they manage to claw a few points back, this goal difference could prove vital when compared to the teams around them. Not shipping a great many goals, then, could prove vital when coming up against Peterborough, and they will be hoping one goal is enough to steal a win.
Peterborough will be without defender Shaun Brisley who was suspended following a red card against Bradford. This will be the second game of his ban, having served the first against Carlisle. Danny Swanson, the midfielder, has been nursing an ankle injury in recent weeks so will likely face a late test to determine whether he will be included. The return of goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik from illness is also unsure, with Day likely to retain his place.
With points ever more important, the Shrews will find themselves with the vast majority of their squad available. Joseph Mills has returned to the squad following a suspension and Tom Bradshaw could be in line for a start after goals in recent games. David McAllister is the only notable doubt, as he has been nursing an ankle injury in recent weeks.
