Manchester United supporters certainly want to forget the team’s dreadful performances last season that not only left the club on the 7th place of the table but also threw them away from European football this season.
The arrival of Louis Van Gaal has surely brought back some optimism to the team’s fans and the experienced Dutch manager is already trying to tide up the house. After bringing in the English young left back Luke Shaw from Southampton and Athletic Bilbao’s versatile midfielder Ander Herrera, Van Gaal wants to strengthen the team’s midfield line with a top class footballer and he seems to have elected Arturo Vidal for that purpose. According to the media, the Red Devils are willing to launch a £42.5 million bid for the Chilean midfielder, who is currently playing for Serie A champions, Juventus.
In a recent interview, Juventus’ director, former Czech international Pavel Nedved, claimed that the Vecchia Signora are not willing to sell their best assets, especially Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal. Nevertheless, Nedved did mention that if a big-money bid was to arrive at the Turin’s team, the board would probably be forced to consider it.
Arturo Vidal himself, who is still enjoying some time off after his World Cup stint, claimed in a recent interview that he does not believe that his career at Juventus is over, although he didn't rule out an hypothetical move elsewhere:"I don't feel like my time at Juventus is over, although I can't say more right now," (...) "When I'm back from Chile, I'll talk to my executives and we'll see what will happen."
The Chilean international arrived at Juventus in 2011 from Bayer Leverkusen and he instantly become a key player at the Italian team. Vidal is also a vital player at the Chilean national team and his influence has, in fact, even increased, ever since Marcelo Bielsa and Jorge Sampaoli later have been transforming Chile into one of the best sides of the South American football.
Vidal can perform several roles in the midfield line, although when he acts as a box-to-box midfielder is probably where one can see the best of him. Nevertheless, Vidal can also be used as a deep-lying playmaker or he can act as an attacking midfielder, providing support to the team’s forwards as he did during the World Cup with Chile.
Whether or not Manchester United will really make an approach towards Vidal, the truth is that the Red Devils’ midfield line truly needs to be refurbished and a talented footballer such as the Chilean “Guerriero” might just be what Van Gaal needs in order to accomplish that.
