Next Tuesday,12th August 2014, the current UEFA Champions League winners, Real Madrid, will measure forces with Sevilla, who won the UEFA Europa League last term, at the Cardiff City Stadium in Wales.
The 2014-15 Real Madrid team looks stronger than ever, at least if we consider their midfield and attacking options. The arrival of the talented German centre midfielder, Toni Kroos, from the Bundesliga champions’ Bayern Munich will offer Real Madrid’s boss, Carlo Ancelotti, yet another quality option for a position already packed with great players, although none of them are blessed with the skills of the Greifswald-born player.
Real Madrid have been spending big this Summer and, apart from Toni Kroos, they have also brought in the Colombian wonderkid James Rodríguez from AS Monaco, who, along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, will certainly form a deadly attacking trio.
For next Tuesday UEFA Super Cup match, Carlo Ancelotti will possibly present a 4-2-3-1 formation with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos forming the midfield duo and with James Rodríguez, Bale and probably Ronaldo (if he manages to be fully recovered from his knee problem), supporting the team’s lone ranger, Karim Benzema. Back in defence and despite all the controversy surrounding the Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas, he will probably be the chosen one to defend Los Blancos’ net.
As for Sevilla, the match against Real Madrid will certainly pose a good opportunity for them to make a stand at an international level once again, after they surprisingly won the UEFA Europa League last term.
The departure of the Croatian playmaker Ivan Rakitic this Summer has certainly caused some damage to the Andalusian team midfield line, although they managed to bring in Grzegorz Krychowiak, a versatile young talented Polish midfielder that might help mitigate the absence of the Balkan midfielder this season. Sevilla have also increased their firepower up in the front by bringing in Iago Aspas, the Galician forward who arrived on loan from Liverpool after a less impressive stint at English football last term.
Sevilla have apparently maintained their structure from last season and their manager, Unai Emery, seems to know how to bring out the best in his men, something that might force Real Madrid to put in some extra elbow grease next Tuesday.
Real Madrid and Sevilla have both won the UEFA Super Cup already on one occasion in their history and next Tuesday’s match will be a great opportunity to increase the silverware on their already packed shelves. No matter what one might say, Los Merengues are firm favourites for the match, although at this stage of the season anything can happen and Sevilla might cause a major upset to their aspirations.
