Next Wednesday, Holland will measure forces with Australia at Estádio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre on a match that will mark the start of the second round of Group B.

Will Holland continue their fantastic moment against Australia?
Will Holland continue their fantastic moment against Australia?

After smashing the all-powerful Spain for the opening match of their group, Holland will now face an opponent, Australia, that, in theory, is considerably inferior to La Roja. It is almost worthless to avoid talking about how the Dutch completely destroyed the World Champions and about how Louis Van Gaal prepared a fantastic tactical trap against the Spanish side, with an all terrain midfield line supported by Wesley Sneijder’s superb passing skills and two men running free up in the front to confine Spain into a mediocre performance and into an embarrassing defeat.

After such vintage performance, some might wonder if the Clockwork Orange is back in action, although it might still be a bit too early to make such an assumption. The truth is that Louis Van Gaal has been doing a fantastic job at the helm of the Dutch side and although there aren’t any “Van Bastens” or “Ruud Gullits” in the team, they have a rejuvenated Van Persie and a devilish Arjen Robben ready to spread misery in the opponents’ defensive line.

For the match against Australia, Holland will certainly hope for a more attacking approach in order to score an early goal and to confine the Socceroos to their own half of the pitch from the very start.

How will Australia react after their defeat against Chile?
How will Australia react after their defeat against Chile?

As for Australia, the match against the Netherlands will be of major importance if they still want to maintain their hopes of proceeding to the next stage of the competition. The Socceroos weren’t strong enough to survive to the first 25 minutes of Chile’s ball possession and attacking football. With just fifteen minutes on the clock, Australia were already 2-0 down, and although they managed to put up a good reaction, they ended up losing the match 3-1.

Australia are clearly the weakest link of the group and they almost certainly don’t have what is necessary to make a stand against a highly motivated Holland team during their next clash.

For the match against Holland, the Socceroos head coach, Ange Postecoglou, is not yet certain if he will be able to count on the contribution of Ivan Franjic, who suffered an injury on the match against Chile.

Holland are firm favourites for next Wednesday’s match against Australia, especially after their tremendous performance on their World Cup opening match.
