After a sour and heavy defeat against France, the Swiss team are now forced to win their last match against Honduras and hope for Ecuador to slip up on their match against France to be 100% sure that they will grant a place at the next stage of the competition. Switzerland started the tournament with a narrow win against Ecuador, on a match during which some of their most important players left something to be desired. The talented centre midfielder Granit Xhaka was nothing but a shadow oi what he normally is and their most credited player Xherdan Shaqiri was also miles away from his usual displays.

On the match against France, Ottmar Hitzfeld brought in some new faces to the team, but again, the Swiss side were far from what they have displayed during the qualification round and showed a fairly worrying defensive chaos with both centre backs looking kind of lost throughout the entire match.

The match against Honduras will be of paramount importance for Switzerland and they cannot afford any more setbacks if they want to walk through to the next round of the tournament. Ottmar Hitzfeld currently has some problems in his defence line, since he will not be able to rely on the contribution of Steve von Bergen, who suffered a severe injury on his face during the match against France, and Phillipe Senderos seems to be miles away from a proper physical condition.

Will Honduras be able to defy Switzerland's favouritism?

As for Honduras, the match against Switzerland will be just for glory, since they already have no chances of walking through to the next round of the competition. After a 3-0 defeat against France for their opening match, Honduras showed some quality moments on their last match with Ecuador, which they lost by a narrow margin, 2-1. Honduras opened the score thanks to a Carlos Costly’s goal on the 31’ minute of the match, but only three minutes later Enner Valencia grabbed the equalizer for Ecuador. It was a very even match but the Central American side failed to cope with the high pressure of Ecuador, a team that is fairly more experienced at this type of competition, and allowed Enner Valencia to score his second for the night and thus sentence the match for good.

Despite their heavy lost against France, Switzerland are firm favourites to win next Wednesday’s match.
