It’s quarter final time at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015! Sri Lanka are all set to take on the might South Africans in this World Cup’s first of 7 knockout games. Both teams have faced each other regularly at World Cups but this one promises to be a cracker jacker of an encounter.

Both have had very contrasting methods of getting to the knockout stages; none too convincingly. Is South Africa’s batting strong or brittle? Are the Sri Lankan bowlers good enough to win them this World Cup or will the batters have to keep doing their thing to give the Lankans a chance? South Africa were one of the top favoured teams to lift the trophy but those claims have tapered off a wee bit after their indifferent performances this World Cup. While they steamrolled West Indies and the Associates, their drubbing against India & rather embarrassing loss against Pakistan would hurt. No real fault can be picked, but it was a collective failure giving AB de Villiers & his side a couple of things to think about in the lead up to this encounter.

Despite coming into most World Cups they have played in as favourites, the Proteas have earned themselves the “chokers” tag with great reason of course. Both teams have been playing decent cricket but Sri Lanka have peaked at the right time. South Africa would still take the loss against India since that was a tough encounter but Pakistan would have hurt them. It may have shown a couple of their vulnerabilities chasing. Pitch & Conditions

A dry day awaits us at Sydney tomorrow. There is a slight change of rain as per Cricket Australia’s MET department. However, the word is that the dryness should definitely get us through a shortish game incase the weather fails to hold up. The wicket is dry and could get a little slow as it wears on bringing the spinners into the game. Sri Lanka have plenty of handy spinners to tie the Proteas down especially if the latter is chasing. Having said that, Imran Tahir has been a revelation this World Cup and has been the only spinner with a 5-for to his name. He could pose some serious problems if there is anything in the wicket.

Having said that, we could expect a good run scoring day considering how the games at SCG have gone about this World Cup.

Players to watch out for

Kumar Sangakkara has been in sparkling form this World Cup. If there is one thing Sangakkara can be proud that he has to his name that AB doesn’t; it is the 4 consecutive hundreds. Sanga has been sublime and his batting has put the blinds over the Lankan bowling. SL will be hoping he can pull off another classic in this crunch encounter.

If there is another man who can match the feats of Kumar Sangakkara, it is AB de Villiers. What can this man not do. He has the fastest 50, 100 & 150 to his name already. De Villiers has done all the talking over the last few days making some fairly bold statements. From saying South Africa are the best side in the World Cup to guaranteeing SA won’t choke, it is time for AB to get the bat do the talking if his side have to close out Lanka.

Quinton de Kock has been woefully out of form this World Cup. Invariably have SA found themselves 1 down for nothing before FAF & Hashim Amla are to resurrect the innings. de Kock has shown his class earlier and South Africa will be hoping their faith in him pays dividends in tomorrow’s encounter.

A. It should be a very very close game tomorrow. I would not definitely have it a run feast but it will be a close game.

B. I expect Sri Lanka to nick South Africa off ever so slightly. The weight of expectation of this SA team is immense. The pressure may get them to choke under pressure. The tag may continue to haunt them.

C. Dilshan, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Matthews, Malinga vs Amla, De Villiers, Steyn & Morkel. Ah, what the hell, too close too call!

B. South Africa have been chasing pretty badly this tournament. This stat should send chills down the spines of a Proteas fan. Since the last World Cup in the sub continent, South Africa have a win loss record of 3:10 when it comes to chasing a target more than 250. Most teams find this difficult and accompany South Africa in this case. India & Australia have been two exceptions to this though. They have a near 50-50 chance when chasing.
