The Lankan Lions defeated the Englishmen in the opening One Day International by a margin of 25 runs and leads the series at 1-0. The hosts piled up 317 runs after losing six wickets in the allotted 50 overs and ripped through the batting line up of the visitors who managed 292 with 17 balls still available. It was a nice beginning for the home side in the seven match series with encouraging result but the tourists can always bounce back by winning the following game.
Tillakaratne Dilshan along with Kusal Perera laid a strong foundation for Sri Lanka by their opening wicket association of 120 with their individual contribution of 88 and 59. Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews scored 55 and 33 while Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne have the ability to move on with the willow. Thisara Perera was the main wicket taker with three while Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis claimed two each.
Moeen Ali hammered his maiden ODI hundred in the match, Ravi Bopara and Ian Bell were the other polished batsmen with 65 and 35 but they need more assistance from Alastair Cook, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan. Chris Woakes and James Tredwell got two wickets each whereas Ben Stokes, Harry Gurney and Moeen Ali can bring astonishing results with the ball.
