Next Saturday, 30th of May 2015, the former European champions, Borussia Dortmund, will measure forces with the surprising Wolfsburg at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin for the DFB Pokal final.
Dortmund has had a devastating campaign, especially during the first half of the season where they found themselves in the relegation zone quite often. The last season of Jürgen Klopp at the helm of Dortmund was marked by several moments of blatant inconsistency and by several others where the team managed to bounce back and return to their good old days, as for example in the Pokal semi-finals match against Bayern Munich last month.
Two weeks ago Dortmund went head-to-head with Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena but weren’t able to counter Dieter Heckling’s men vertical game and ended up losing the match by 2-1. Next weekend’s clash will certainly be very different from that particular one, since it will be played in a neutral venue and because Dortmund want to save their disastrous season by winning the second most important trophy of German football: the DFB Pokal.
As for Wolfsburg, die Wölfe had an overall fantastic season, as they secured the second place of the Bundesliga table, ten points behind the all-powerful champions, Bayern Munich. Dieter Heckling’s Wolfsburg have only been defeated five times this season, the exact same number of defeats of Pep Guardiola’s Bayern.
Wolfsburg showed impressive levels of consistency throughout the season and sealed some impressive results as well, as for example their 4-1 win over Bayern back in January, where they put up an almost vintage performance.
Wolfsburg have not lost any single match against Dortmund this season and they will certainly try to extend their record after next weekend’s clash. Last season, Dortmund eliminated them from Pokal but things are very different this term and die Wölfe will surely try to avenge last year’s painful defeat.
Led by the Belgian wonderboy Kevin De Bruyne, who has recently refused to return to Chelsea as he does not want to work with José Mourinho anymore, this player led his team’s midfield during the entire season, acting as a true “maestro” of Wolfsburg’s sweet symphonie.
