Next Sunday, 22nd of March 2015, two of the biggest rivals of European football, Liverpool and Manchester United, will measure forces at the emblematic Anfield Road for round 30 of the English Premier League.
An early goal by Marouane Fellaini was what Manchester United needed to regain their confidence and to build up a solid win on the difficult home match against Tottenham. The Belgian midfielder probably had one of his best performances since he arrived at Old Trafford and helped United grant an extremely motivating win after their home setback against Arsenal on the FA Cup Quarter-Finals. The Red Devils were by far the best team on the pitch for large periods of the match and especially during the first-half, during which Louis Van Gaal’s managed to take full advantage of several Spurs’ defensive mistakes.
United’s season so far has been far from brilliant and their upcoming match against their rivals of Liverpool will present an enormous test to the team’s capacities.
As for Liverpool, after the somewhat unimpressive season start, they have managed to put themselves together and are now living the dream, especially at the English Premier League. The last time the Reds lost a league match was back in December, precisely against Manchester United at Old Trafford. That particular clash was truly an eye opener for the team, whose performances have been improving as the matches go by.
Last Monday, the Reds snatched a precious win after their visit to Liberty Stadium. A single goal from their captain Jordan Henderson, was enough to grant Liverpool another three precious points on their battle for a place at UEFA Champions League next season.
The upcoming match against their rivals of Manchester United is an excellent opportunity for Brendan Rodgers’ boys to avenge last December’s unfair defeat and to change places with the Red Devils at the EPL table.
It is always difficult to name any favourites for this type of derby; nevertheless, given their excellent recent run and since they are playing home in front of their enthusiastic supporters, it is fair to point Liverpool as favourites for next Sunday’s clash.
