Next Saturday, 1st of November 2014, a confident Newcastle will take on an unpredictable Liverpool at St. James’ Park for round ten of the English Premier League, a match that offers the home side the opportunity to grant their third consecutive league win but that also provides Liverpool the opportunity to return to wins after a somewhat sour home draw against Hull last weekend.
Newcastle’s poor season start is being somehow compensated for with their last two consecutive wins on rounds eight and nine respectively of the English Premier League. Two weeks ago, the Magpies were at the bottom of the table, together with the newcomers Burnley, without a single win in their first seven league matches. Nevertheless, in just two weeks, everything has suddenly changed and Newcastle’s manager, Alan Pardew, managed to temporarily sweep the crisis under the rug with two important wins over Leicester and Tottenham. Their last weekend’s win at White Hart Lane was not only surprising but also fairly impressive, especially if we consider that the Spurs scored first and controlled long periods of the match. The Magpies have won their first away league match since March and managed to jump a few places on the table, keeping the relegation zone at bay.
To increase their already high motivation levels, Newcastle granted a fantastic 2-0 win at Etihad Stadium last Wednesday, kicking Manchester City out of the Capital One Cup.
Next weekend’s match against Liverpool will certainly not be easy, especially if we think how inconsistent the Reds have been so far this season. Newcastle have managed to rally the troops for their last two clashes and an hypothetical win over Liverpool will surely offer them that piece of mind they have been looking for for so long.
As for Liverpool, it is somewhat hard to describe the Reds’ campaign so far, as the team keeps oscillating from quality to miserable performances. After a narrow win at Loftus Road over QPR, Liverpool sucumbed at the hands of Real Madrid for the UEFA Champions League, on a match where the Reds curiously had a very good start.
Last Tuesday’s night Liverpool returned to wins after overcoming Swansea at Anfield Road for the Capital One Cup by 2-1. Nevertheless, last weekend , Brendan Rodgers’ boys didn’t find the way to defeat Hull City at home and ended up by conceding the second draw of the season.
Regardless of their constant ups and downs, Liverpool enjoy from a slight favouritism for next Saturday’s match, but people should not be surprised if Newcastle manage to find a way to overcome this inconsistent Reds’ side.
