Next Wednesday, 22nd of June 2016, a motivated Hungary will measure forces with an extremely inconsistent Portugal at Stade de Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region for their last match on Group F.
Portugal fell once again short of expectations after conceding a goalless draw against Austria last time out. The Portuguese had already shared points with debutants Iceland on their opening match of the tournament and weren’t capable of returning to winning ways against an Austrian team that were not able to rely on the services of two of their most important players, Zlatko Junuzovic (injured) and Aleksandar Dragovic (suspended).
Portugal had several chances to score, but not even Cristiano Ronaldo was able to break the deadlock. The Real Madrid’s superstar missed a penalty on minute 79’, thus extending Portugal’s goal drought. Fernando Santos’ men are now on a very tight situation and need to defeat Hungary next time out in order to proceed to the next stage of the competition. A defeat out there will kick Portugal out of the tournament, but the Portuguese manager is 100% certain the his team will win the next match and claw the first place of their group.
The highly experienced Portuguese head coach will be able to rely on the services of all his players for the important match against Hungary since there aren’t, for now, any names on the team’s injury list.
As for Hungary, they have so far been a pleasant surprise in this tournament and after their splendid win over Austria in their opening match, the Magyar team have managed to claw one point from the match against Iceland last time out. Hungary had to dig very deep in order to snatch a point from the clash against the debutants Iceland and had to wait until the dying moments of the match to finally get it.
Bernd Storck is doing an excellent job with the Hungarians and so far everything seems to be in place for them to grab a spot in the next stage of the tournament. A draw against Portugal is enough to help them walk through to the next round of the competition.
