Next Sunday, 12th of June 2016, the current World Champions Germany will measure forces with the Ukraine at Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille Métropole on a Group C match of Euro 2016.
Germany have never been defeated by the Ukraine so far, but the three times European champions need to rally the troops if they don’t want to suffer a major upset next Sunday.
After winning the World Cup title in Brazil back in 2014, Germany have been revealing some inconsistency in their game and that has cost them a hand full of upsets since then. Three defeats in their last five competitive matches is probably not a good indicator for Joachim Löw, who certainly knows that the team needs to be at their best if they want to succeed in a group where they will have to face several complicated opponents such as the Ukraine, Poland and Northern Ireland.
For next Sunday’s fixture against the Ukrainians, Joachim Löw will not be able to rely on the services of Mats Hummels, who is still recovering from a calf injury he picked up in Mid-May, and on Antonio Rudiger, who would be the chosen one to replace Hummels, but who will now miss the rest of the tournament due to severe knee injury.
As for the Ukraine, the Eastern European team will play the first major tournament without their most important star, the former AC Milan and Dynamo Kyiv sharpshooter Andriy Shevchenko, who is now part of Mykhaylo Fomenko’s coaching staff.
The Ukraine have only conceded four goals in ten matches during the Qualification Round and, for that reason, it is fair to say that their defensive line is probably their most important asset. Although it might seem an irrefutable fact, the Ukrainians have conceded no more, no less, than four goals in their last two preparation matches and especially on the match against Romania, which they have won by 4-3, the Ukraine’s defensive line was particularly uninspired.
Mykhaylo Fomenko have an excellent set of players at his disposal, especially in the midfield line where Andriy Yarmolenko, Denis Garmash and Yevhen Konoplyanka are constant threats to the opposition’s back lines.
