Next Monday, 20th of June 2016, a moralized Slovakia will measure forces with a strong England team at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne on their last match at Group B.
After losing to Wales on their opening match in the European Championship, Slovakia managed to pull rank and to overcome an extremely fragilized Russia last time out.
Two first-half goals scored by Vladimir Weiss and the usual suspect Marek Hamsik offered the Slovaks their first win of the tournament and opened the doors of the next stage of the competition in case of a positive result against England next time out. Slovakia controlled almost the entire match against a disheartened Russian side and have only showed some signs of nervousness when Denis Glushakov put his team back in the match with just 10 minutes to play. The Slovaks proved the be an extremely well organized team and, although they assumed the match from minute one, they were able to control Russia’s slow attacking movements without any major problem.
The upcoming match against England is of the utmost importance for Slovakia, who in case of win might claw the first place of their group leaving the English and the Welsh behind (if Wales fail to grant the three points against Russia).
As for England, they came from behind to claim the three points against Wales last time out. First-half screamer by Gareth Bale left the English with something to think about during the break and Roy Hodgson’s men pulled off a strong and organized reaction during the second-half. James Vardy netted the equalizer on minute 56’ and offered England extra motivation to go hunting for the win and, when everyone thought that the match was about to end up in a draw, Daniel Sturridge netted the winning goal on injury time after an assist by Dele Alli.
A win against Slovakia will offer England the first place of their group, regardless of the outcome of the match between Russia and Wales and, for that reason, the English have all the reasons to go all in without being afraid of the consequences.
