Next Sunday, 15th of November 2015, Norway will travel to Budapest to measure forces with Hungary at the Groupama Arena for the second leg of the UEFA European Championship play-off stage.
László Kleinheisler is the man of the moment at Hungarian football after netting his team’s winning goal at Oslo against Norway last Thursday’s night. The Magyars’ pragmatic performance at Ullevaal Stadion earned them a valuable win and respective advantage in the UEFA Euro Championship play-off and are now on a very good position to secure a place at next year’s tournament in France. Fairly poor goalkeeping skills from the Norwegian doorman Nyland allowed Videoton’s midfielder László Kleinheisler to score his first international goal during his debut with the Hungarian National Team. The 21-year old midfielder lonely goal might prove to be of the utmost importance for the Magyar team, who just need a draw to eliminate Norway and book their place at the Euro 2016 next year. Hungary have failed to win their last five home matches against the Nordic team and their last domestic win over Norway was back in 1981.
Hungary’s last participation in a UEFA European Championship was almost half a century ago, when they reached the semi-finals at Belgium in 1972.
Hungary’s 39-year old experienced goalkeeper, Gabor Kiraly, who became famous for wearing long grey jogging bottoms, put up a solid performance at Oslo last Thursday, but at the end of the match he told the media that he and his teammates need to recover fast for the upcoming fixture and prove once again that they are a very strong team.
As for Norway, they might consider themselves fairly unlucky after what happened at Ullevaal Stadion last week. The Norwegians had an apparent control of the match with plenty more ball possession and a great deal of chances to score, but, in the end, they failed to overcome Hungary’s well organized defensive wall.
Norway’s record against Hungary is extremely positive and the last time they visited that Eastern European country, they sealed an easy 2-0 win in a friendly match.
The last and only presence Norway had at an European Championship was back in 2000, but they failed to walk through the group stage on that occasion.
