Next Sunday, 11th of October 2015, a super motivated Ireland will travel to Warsaw to measure forces with Poland at Stadion Narodowy for the 2016 UEFA European Championship Qualifying Round.
Last Thursday’s night was memorable for all of those at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin who witnessed Ireland’s splendid 1-0 win over the current World Champions, Germany. Shane Long was the hero of the night as he scored the Irish goal that annihilated the German Panzer and that placed his National Team in a somewhat privileged position to grant a place at the UEFA European Championship next year.
The Irish have only been defeated once during their qualifying campaign to next year’s tournament, which happened in their visit to Scotland almost one year ago. A lonely goal from Shaun Maloney was enough to grant Gordon Strachan’s men the three points, during a match where the Irish weren’t by any means inferior to their neighbours, but ended up losing the clash anyway.
Ireland’s trip to Warsaw will, nevertheless, be far from easy for Martin O’Neill’s men, especially if we have in mind that the Irish have never won in Poland both for competitive or friendly matches. Although this is a match that can go both ways, a draw might prove to be enough for both sides to grant automatic qualification for the European Championship, in case Germany end up defeated by Georgia at home next Sunday.
As for Poland, the White Eagles have been, as Ireland, only defeated once on the qualifying campaign to the Euro 2016. After an excellent streak of results, the Polish were not strong enough to make a stand against the all-powerful Germany early last month and ended up defeated 3-1. The work that Adam Nawalka has been developing with the Polish National Team since he took the helm late in 2013 cannot go unnoticed, as he managed to wake up and rebuild a disheartened team, while transporting them to higher stages of the game over a short period of time.
Poland have remained unbeaten in their last six qualifying matches played in their own territory and they have a strong chance of extending such excellent run if they defeat Ireland next Sunday, a win that would grant them automatic promotion to the European Championship at France next year.
