Next Sunday, 14th of June 2015, a fairly inconsistent Russia will measure forces with a highly moralized Austria at the spectacular Otkrytie Arena in Moscow for the Group G of Euro 2016 qualifiers.
After the World Cup's utterly disappointing campaign last Summer at Brazil, the Russian Football Union decided to maintain Fabio Capello as their head coach but so far things have not improved for the Eastern European team. Russia are actually in a delicate situation at Group G at the moment. They are in the third place of the group behind Sweden and the group leaders, Austria, and only a win next Sunday can bring them back to the battle for a place at the Euro 2016.
Russia continue to fail to impress and their performances remain as bland as they were about a year ago. After having been awarded with the three points because of the incidents occurred at Podgorica back in March, the Russian team has taken part in two friendly matches and have only won one of them. After an unimpressive goalless draw with Kazakhstan at home, Russia have finally returned to wins when they hosted their neighbours of Belarus last weekend. Capello’s men won by 4-2 but the match was far from easy and was only decided in favour of Russia in the last 15 minutes.
Russia are still struggling to find their identity under the command of Don Fabio and a negative result against Austria will certainly put them in a very complicated situation.
As for Austria, the team of Marcel Koller is probably one of the most pleasant surprises of the Euro 2016 qualifiers as they are leading Group G and display a very attractive and highly effective style of game. With four wins from five matches, Austria are currently undefeated and comfortably sitting at the top of their qualifying group. Ten goals scored and just two conceded is Das Team's current record, something that they are certainly hoping to extend during their visit to Moscow next weekend.
This is definitely the best Austrian national team from the last 25 years, probably only comparable to the one that took part in Italy’s World Cup back in 1990, led by Anton Polster and Andreas Herzog, and they will surely not throw this excellent opportunity of granting a place at Euro 2016 to waste.
