ScheduleTuesday, 14 April 2015 at 18:45 GMT / 19:45 UK / 00:15 IST VenueEstadio Vicente Calderón (Madrid) |
Next Tuesday, 14th of April 2015, the current World and European champions, Real Madrid, will measure forces with their neighbours and rivals of Atlético Madrid at Vicente Calderón for the first leg of the Quarter-finals stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Last season’s Champions League final will be revisited next Tuesday, when the two Madrid’s giants go head-to-head at Atlético’s stronghold, where Real have already been heavily punished this season during a La Liga match that took place last February.
Los Blancos seem to have overcome the negative period that struck them last month and are now on an excellent row with three consecutive wins. On those respective matches, Carlo Ancelotti’s boys have scored no more no less than 14 goals and conceded only one, thus displaying an image of strength and cohesion that was nowhere to be seen last month.
Cristiano Ronaldo seems to have as well come to terms with his alleged problems with some of his companions and returned in great style on these last three matches.
The upcoming clash at Vicente Calderon will be an excellent test to this reinvigorated Real Madrid and will also present a great opportunity for them to avenge their humiliating 4-0 defeat from last February.
As for Atlético, the Colchoneros, who experienced plenty of difficulties to overcome Bayer Leverkusen on the previous round of the competition, will now have the opportunity to vindicate last season’s Lisbon final and claim their place in the semi-finals of this year’s edition of the UEFA Champions League.
Atlético’s manager, Diego Simeone, has recently confessed that it might be easier for Atlético to measure forces with big teams such as Real and Barcelona in a tournament such as the Champions League than defeat such teams on a season long competition such as La Liga, due to the overall quantity and quality of the players each team has at its disposal.
Last weekend, Atlético, who have also experienced several difficulties at La Liga last month, failed once again to clinch the three points on their usually complicated visit to La Rosaleda. The clash against Málaga ended in 2-2 draw and Atlético might consider themselves lucky for the match's outcome, since their second goal was clearly granted from an offside position.
It is hard to name any favourites for next Tuesday’s clash, but if we have in mind what happened the last time Real Madrid visited Vicente Calderón, it is fair to say that Atlético have big chances of winning the match.
