Next Saturday, 6th of June 2015, two major European powerhouses, Juventus and Barcelona, will measure forces at the Olympiastadion in Berlin for the UEFA Champions League final.
The first season of Luis Enrique at the helm of Barcelona has everything in place to become a truly memorable one. After their deserved triumph at La Liga, Barça have easily overcame Athletic Bilbao during the Copa del Rey final last weekend, thus securing the 27th Spanish cup of their history. The Catalan team controlled the entire match and have almost decided it during the first 45 minutes as they went to the break winning by 2-0, thanks to goals from the usual suspects, Leo Messi and Neymar. Barça’s dominance continued in the second-half and Messi’s second goal of the match on the 74th minute didn’t came as a surprise. Athletic tried to get back in the game, but it was already too late, even after the goal of their wonderboy, Iñaki Williams, on the 80th minute.
Barcelona’s game is definitely different since Luis Enrique assumed the command of the team last Summer. The similarities with Guardiola’s tiki-taka are blatantly obvious, but the team seems to be even more solid now than they were during Pep’s reign.
The clash against the two-time Champions League winners of Juventus will definitely not be a walk in the park for Luis Enrique’s men, although, from what we have been able to witness this season, they might have everything in their favour to claim the trophy.
As for Juventus, the Vecchia Signora have won, once again, the Serie A title and it is fair to say that they didn’t have to put much effort into it. Juve finished the season with 87 points from 38 matches, 17 more than their closest rivals, AS Roma, who were the runners-up for the second campaign in a row.
The departure of Antonio Conte last Summer rung the alarm at the Turin-based team, although his “heir”, Massimiliano Allegri, didn’t fall short of expectations. The experienced Italian manager won both the Serie A and the Coppa Italia and may lead the team to their third win at the UEFA Champions League. The last time Juve won the most important European trophy was back in the 1995-96 season, when they defeated Litmanen’s Ajax after a penalty shootout.
