bros it's not a batting battle it's a bowling battle, whoever has upper hand in bowling will win the match. Aussies are clearly favourite because of their strong bowling line up and where else they will perform best than their own backyard. How far Malinga can go on his own? Who else is in SL team to support him. Most of SL bowlers are slow medium pace and spinner who get whacked if pitch turned out to be dead. Aus have a variety of bowlers at their disposal so they can quickly adapt to any condition. Aus batting first can be dangerous as they have freedom. Warner, Maxwell, Finch, Faulkner, Watson ... list is long. Can SL restrict them all? Even if one is left lose he will become nightmare of SL.

SL have to rely totally on their experience batting line up which is pretty solid but they can't be explosive against tight Australian bowlers.

So here is the equation, Aus batting first will go for 300 and SL will fail to chase. SL batting first will be restricted to 285 or so and Aus can chase it down.

It’s been over 20 days since the Australian team started their campaign against England. 20 odd days. After a huge buildup, things seem to have tapered up of sorts for the home team with the rain playing spoil sport at the Gabba.

Australia have had 3 full games, the least amongst all teams in this World Cup. The match against Lanka tomorrow could go a long way into determining how deep the Aussies go in this World Cup. A win could mean a home semi-final for the Aussies at the SCG while a loss could have them play NZ in the latter’s backyard.

Key Players to watch out for
It’s hard to believe Kumar Sangakkara’s calling it time on his 50 over career after the World Cup. One of the World’s most underrated cricketers for his feats, Sanga is in top form. With already 2 centuries this ICC Crick
et World Cup, his bat is looking ominous. Sri Lanka are the only country to hit 5 centuries this World Cup.

Mahela Jayawardene has made it clear that the Australian pace bowlers do not intimidate him and they can go as fast as they come. Jayawardene played a crucial role early on when the Lankans found themselves in a hole in their fixture against Afghanistan. While Sri Lanka look set to go through to the quarters, they will hope that both their veterans come good moving into the business end of the tournament.

As far as Australia are concerned, they will be hoping James Faulkner comes good. Faulkner who is returning to the side after a side strain did not bother scorers against Afghanistan but Australia will be hoping he could showcase the class that he did against England a year ago.

Mitchell Starc has been a force with the ball for Australia. His spell against New Zealand set the tournament alight. While conditions aren't expected to be conducive to swing bowling, if Starc can put in half the performance here that he did against the Kiwis then the Australians could make quick work of it.

Pitch and Conditions
Despite now being a drop-in pitch the SCG wicket is not too far away from its old character. The wicket is expected to offer some turn which could favour the Sri Lankans.

It won't be a rank turner but the dry conditions should play into Lanka's hands.

Rumours have it that Australia will look to bring in Xavier Doherty for his left arm orthodox on a dry SCG wicket. Shane Watson too, who was dropped could find an easy way into the side in place of Mitchell Marsh for the former could come in handy with his medium pace.

Sri Lanka have lost a good bit of their squad due to injuries and apart from forced changed, there should not be too many surprises on offer.

All in all it is expected to be a cracker of a contest despite Sri Lanka’s poor record of 4:8 (Win-Loss ratio) at the SCG. However, their recent form down under could begin to change that come Sunday.

Predictions
A. The odds favour Australia who have not lost to Sri Lanka in a World Cup game since the 1996 final. The two sides have met on 4 occasions after that with the Aussies getting the better of the Lankans on all occasions. The 2011 encounter at Colombo was a washout.

B. Australia have preferred to bat first against the Lankans in WC affairs and have preferred to put a total on the board. The Australian batting looks strong to post a score of over 300 if they get a go early on in the piece especially against a depleted Lankan attack that lacks the experience of a certain Rangana Herath.

C. Lasith Malinga holds the key to the Lankan fortunes as his slower variations could hold up on in the pitch. As the stats have it, Sri Lanka tend to win over 70% of their matches when Malinga gets 3+ wickets.

D. For Australia, their win % goes over 80 when Steven Smith scores in excess of 50. Smith seems settled at his new number 3 position and could be the mainstay of the batting along with skipper Michael Clarke who the team will look to play around.

E. Watch out for a tailing Mitchell Starc delivery against an ageing Tillakaratne Dilshan who has had the habit of falling across and playing around his pads. If that happens, you can expect Starc to slip one by and have him trapped bowled or LBW.
