Next Saturday, 13th September 2014, Borussia Dortmund will entertain Freiburg at the beautiful Westfalenstadion for round three of the Bundesliga.
After their home defeat during the Bundesliga opening day, Dortmund granted the first three points of the season at the expenses of Augsburg last week. The German Super Cup holders started the match at full steam and with just 15 minutes played they were already winning 2-0. Dortmund dominated almost the entire match and it didn’t come as a surprise when they scored the third goal twelve minutes before the end of the match. Nevertheless and for some reason, Dortmund, who can also complain about a penalty over Mkhitaryan that the referee failed to see on the last minutes of match, fell asleep and allowed Augsburg to score twice in just seven minutes, which gave them a renewed sense of hope of the getting a late equalizer.
Jürgen Klopp’s boys have been somewhat inconsistent this season, something that has already cost them a painful defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen on the first match of the season.
For the match against Freiburg, Klopp who is certainly happy to have Kagawa back in his team, will not be able to count on the contribution of Marco Reus, Schmelzer, Sahin, Gundogan, Hummels and Blaszczykowski, all sidelined due to injury.
As for Freiburg, the match at Westfalenstadion will certainly be far from easy as the home side is surely hoping to compensate their supporters for the disappointing performance and result of their first match of the season.
After being defeated on Bundesliga day 1 at Frankfurt, Freiburg didn’t manage to get anything better than a draw from their home match against Moenchengladbach. Christian Streich’s men did everything they could to win the match but failed to score a single goal from their 17 attempts.
For the match against Dortmund, Streich will not be able to count on Sebastian Freis, Sascha Riether and Christopher Jullien, since all of them are currently recovering from their respective injuries.
When both sides met at the Westfalenstadion last term, Dortmund smashed the visitors 5-0 thanks to two goals from Reus, two from Blaszczykowski and another from Lewandowski. Although it is not likely that history might repeat itself (since the three players that scored last season will not even be in the match), Dortmund are firm favourites for the next Saturday’s clash.
