Next Saturday, 1st of August 2015, the current Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich, will measure forces with the DFB-Pokal winners, VfL Wolfsburg, at the Volkswagen Arena for the sixth edition of the German Super Cup, the DFL-Supercup.
The last time both sides went head-to-head was back in January in a Bundesliga match after the winter break and the Bavarians supporters have certainly not forgotten that particular clash for the wrong reasons. The German champions were completely trashed 4-1 by an utterly inspired Wolfsburg that dominated all aspects of the match and became the first team in almost six-years' time to inflict more than three goals to the all-powerful Bayern Munich.
Much has changed since that particular match but it was Wolfsburg who ended the season in style by winning the DFB-Pokal final against Borussia Dortmund. Die Wölfe had a splendid campaign last term, mostly because of the fantastic work their head coach, Dieter Hecking, is still conducting with the team and due to the immense talent of some of their players such as the Belgian wonderboy Kevin De Bruyne, the powerful Dutch forward Bas Dost and the Croatian devilish wide playmaker Ivan Perisic.
The upcoming clash against Bayern Munich will take place at the Volkswagen Arena, home of the current Pokal holders, and such fact might prove to be decisive on the match's outcome, since Wolfsburg have not conceded any defeat at home last season.
As for Bayern Munich, after dominating the first half of the season before the winter break, the Bavarian team were not particularly impressive in the last quarter of the past campaign. Their staggering and mechanized attacking football has slowly faded away and several teams started to face Bayern with less “respect”, as had happened earlier in the season.
Pep Guardiola’s men have only won two of the five pre-season matches in which they've taken took part so far and their overall performances were extremely inconsistent.
The media keep claiming that this will be Guardiola’s last season at the helm of Bayern and such news might cause some unrest in the locker room before the first official match of the new football year.
