Next Saturday, 9th of May 2015, the super inconsistent Manchester United will travel to Selhurst Park to measure forces with Crystal Palace for round 36 of the English Premier League.
Twenty six goal attempts and 81% of ball possession proved not to be enough for United to overcome West Brom at Old Trafford last weekend. The Red Devils had an apparent control of the match and they were able to rely again on the contribution of Robin Van Persie after a long absence due to injury, but not even the Dutchman was able to overcome an utterly inspired Boaz Myhill. After missing several chances to score, United were surprised by a somewhat lucky goal from a free kick that rebounded on Olsson and ended up in David de Gea’s net.
The Red Devils tried to react to the goal but they continued to display an immense lack of inspiration up in the front, even from the penalty spot, after Van Persie allowed Boaz Myhill to block his attempt on the 74th minute of the match.
United are currently on a very poor streak of results, with three consecutive defeats in their last five matches and, because of that, they have seriously compromised their chances of claiming a place in next season’s edition of the UEFA Champions League.
After a promising pre-season, Louis Van Gaal still has a lot to prove to Manchester United’s supporters and the eventual failure in snatching a place at the Champions League next term will surely constitute an utter failure for the experienced and highly acclaimed Dutch manager.
As for Crystal Palace, the Eagles are also on a recent poor streak of results with three consecutive defeats on their last five matches. Last weekend, Alan Pardew’s men saw Chelsea being coronated as the English Premier League champions after succumbing at the hands of José Mourinho’s Blues at Stamford Bridge.
The Eagles are already safe from relegation but they will certainly give Manchester United a hard time at Selhurst Park next Saturday.
Regardless of both sides’ recent poor form, Manchester United are firm favourites to claim the three points next weekend, but they will need to do way better than they have in their recent clashes if they want to overcome Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace.
