Next Saturday, 2nd of July 2016, an extremely motivated Italy will measure forces with the current World Champions of Germany at the Stade de Bordeaux for the Euro 2016 Quarter-finals.
After losing their last group match to the Republic of Ireland, Italy have pulled rank and showed no mercy to the current European Champions, Spain, beating them by 2-0. The Squadra Azzurra controlled almost every aspect of the match and fully deserved their victory against an opponent that should have done more to counter Antonio Conte’s pragmatic approach to the game. A first-half goal by Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini and a late one by Southampton’s powerful striker Graziano Pelle were enough to sink the Spanish Armada that were once again miles away from what they managed to achieve four years ago. The upcoming match against Germany will certainly be an extremely complicated one for the Italian side, but their head-to-head record against the Mannschaft is fairly positive. For next weekend’s clash, Antonio Conte will not be able to rely on the services of experienced PSG midfielder Thiago Motta, who is currently suspended. Roma’s defensive midfielder Daniele De Rossi is struggling with a hip injury and is a doubt out there.
As for Germany, after their somewhat discrete performance in the group stage matches, they have pulled off a solid display of power against Slovakia last time out. A comprehensive 3-0 win, a missed penalty and another hand full of missed goal chances were more than enough to defeat an uninspired Slovakia side, who struggled to cope with their opponents’ early goal and failed to get back in the match after that.
Germany are the current World Champions and although some might claim that they aren’t as good as they were two years ago, the truth is they seem to be getting better as the matches go by and will certainly give Italy a hard day on the job next weekend.
For that match, Germany's head coach, Joachim Löw, is not yet certain if he will be able to count on the contribution of Bayern Munich centre back Jérôme Boateng, who is still recovering from a recent calf injury.
