Next Sunday, 14th of June 2015, the current European champions, Spain, will go head-to-head with Belarus at Borisov Arena on a Group C match for the Euro 2016 qualifiers.
Spain are currently on the second place of Group C, behind the leaders Slovakia, and cannot afford any major slip ups during their travel to Belarus if they want to keep their hopes of reaching the Eastern European side at the top of the group alive.
After Spain’s disappointing and almost embarrassing overall performance at the World Cup in Brazil last Summer, much was written and said about the future of Vicente Del Bosque and about the future of the National Team itself. Nevertheless, despite all the fuss caused by the media, nothing or not much has changed at La Roja. Del Bosque failed again to bring new and fresh ideas to the team and, although he has made some changes in his recent call-ups, the truth is that life in the Spanish National Team is somewhat similar to what it was about one year ago.
Spain have been defeated twice in their last five official matches. A defeat against Germany and another one against the inconsistent Dutch team served to prove that there is still much to do before Spain manage to get back on tracks.
In their last Euro 2016 qualifying match, La Roja overcame Ukraine at home by a narrow 1-0 and managed to maintain the point difference to Slovakia, but once again their performance left something to be desired.
The match against Belarus will certainly not be a walk in the park for the current European champions, especially if we have in mind that the Eastern European side has improved significantly since the young manager, Alyaksandr Khatskevich, took the helm of the team later last year. Belarus managed to bounce back from Georgi Kondratiev’s age of darkness and now appear to be a fairly more consistent and well organized team, especially when playing at home in front of their supporters.
Last weekend, Belarus lost to their neighbours of Russia for a friendly match by 4-2, but they have left behind a very good overall image of themselves. Two goals from Dinamo Minsk’s former star and current Rubin’s midfielder Syarhey Kislyak were almost enough to sink Russia’s adrift vessel, who did still manage to bounce back and score three goals in the last 20 minutes of the match.
