Next Thursday, 8th of October 2015, an undefeated Romania will measure forces with a considerably inconsistent Finnish side at Arena Nationala in Bucharest for the 2016 UEFA European Championship Qualifying Round.
It is fair to say that Romanian football is currently miles away from what it used to be back in the 1980s and in the first-half of the 1990s, but it is not fair to ignore the work Anghel Iordanescu has been carrying out with an ageing lot of footballers that are yet to be defeated in the 2016 European Championship Qualifying campaign. The iconic 65-year old head coach returned from retirement almost one year ago to led the Romanian National team for the third time in his career and so far he has been doing very good.
Romania are currently in the second place of Group F, one point behind the surprising leaders, Northern Ireland, and three points above their neighbours of Hungary. Iordanescu’s men are on a three match row without a single win and without scoring a single goal. Romania’s last three matches ended in a goalless draw, something that has prevented them from leading their qualifying group by now. After their draw against Hungary, a very even match that could have gone either way, Romania failed to return to wins when they hosted a winless Greece at home back in September.
Next Thursday’s match is of capital importance for Iordanescu’s boys, who need to win in order to extend their dream of granting a place in next year’s tournament.
As for Finland, the Nordic side are currently going through a very positive period after two consecutive wins for their respective qualifying round matches. After a splendid win at Greece, the Finnish side managed to secure the three points in their home clash against the brave Faroe Islands’ team.
Finland are currently in the fourth place of their group, three points behind Hungary and six points trailing behind their next Thursday’s opponents, Romania. A win at Bucharest would certainly place them in a very good position to continue threatening their closest contenders.
