Will Sevilla return to victories next Sunday against Villarreal?

Sevilla’s trip to Bilbao last week didn’t work out exactly how Los Sevillistas were expecting. The team was hammered by a strong and more cohese Athletic side and seriously compromised their expectations of grabbing a place at the UEFA Champions League qualifying round next season. Sevilla are now six points behind Athletic and they have Real Sociedad at their heels. Unai Emery’s boys probably have their minds set on the UEFA Europa League semi-finals second leg against Valencia (in the middle of the week) and that fact is probably distracting them from their duties at La Liga’s.

Next Sunday’s clash against Villarreal might be a good opportunity for Los Sevillistas to return to victories as they will face a team that has been fairly inconsistent recently.

For the match against the Yellow Submarine, Unai Emery will still not be to rely on the skilled Russian winger Denis Cheryshev and on the Uruguayan midfielder Sebastián Cristóforo, both sidelined because of long term injuries. The Portuguese side back Diogo Figueiras will also miss the match due to suspension.

As for Villarreal, the match against Sevilla will not be a very easy one if we consider the team’s current form. Last week, Villarreal had a night to remember against Barcelona at El Madrigal: they were winning 2-0 the middle of the second half, nevertheless, quite suddenly, their dreams started to crumble as the Blaugranas scored three goals in almost under twenty minutes and clinched a fantastic 3-2 win. In fact, Villarreal helped Barcelona to bounce back as they scored two own goals in just thirteen minutes, which served as a sparkle for the Blaugranas’ recovery.

At the end of the match, Villarreal’s manager Marcelino Toral considered that his team’s defeat was a very cruel punishment, especially considering what they had done during almost the entire match.

For the match against Barcelona, Marcelino Toral will still not be able to count on the Spanish defenders José Dorado and Pablo Iniguez, both sidelined due to injury.

When both teams measured forces at El Madrigal back in December, Sevilla clinched a fantastic 2-1 win thanks to goals from Carlos Bacca and Juan Calla, while Perbet scored the home goal in the dying hours of the match from the penalty spot. Next Sunday, it is very likely that history takes on an identical course, particularly if one considers the negative moment Villarreal have been going through and the enthusiasm surrounding the Sevilla side recently.
