Next Wednesday, Bayern Munich will once again measure forces with Manchester United, this time at the Fussball Arena München, for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals. Bayern Munich were somewhat surprised by Manchester United’s impetus at Old Trafford last week. The Bavarian team dominated the match, they had 70 per cent of ball possession and they looked far more dangerous than their opponents during their attacking movements, but they only managed to beat an inspired David De Gea once.
Despite having claimed that United have one the best teams in the World and that he was quite satisfied with his side’s performance, Pep Guardiola didn’t look exactly pleased by the match final outcome and he probably made that pretty clear to his players at the end of the match. Despite Bayern’s almost flawless campaign at the Bundesliga so far, they didn’t look so strong and focused at the UEFA Champions League and the Red Devils might want to take some advantage from that fact for next Wednesday’s match.
Pep Guardiola will have plenty of headaches when it comes to build up his team for the clash against United. With Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez suspended and with Thiago Alcantâra’s injury, the Spanish head coach will have to reinvent his side’s midfield line, although it is not likely that he will change his usual 4-1-4-1 tactical approach.
As for Manchester United, the clash against Bayern will surely be their most important match so far this season. With a disappointing career at the English Premier League, David Moyes’ Manchester United look at the Champions League as an escape for such an underachieving season.
The team’s inconsistent performances away from home this season don’t anticipate anything good for United’s visit to the Fussball Arena München next Wednesday, and only a tremendously inspired Red Devils’ side will be able to take something positive out of such a difficult match.
For next Wednesday’s clash, David Moyes is not yet certain if he will be able to count on Wayne Rooney, who has a badly bruised toe that might kept him out of the pitches for at least a week. These are definitely not good news for the Scottish manager and the scenario is even worse if we have in mind that United’s other top class forward, Robin Van Persie, will also miss the match due to injury.
